For Christmas, That Little Girl received a voucher for Kiwi Crate. For anyone who isn’t familiar, because I know I was not, Kiwi Crate is a monthly subscription service. We sign up, they send her a box of activities designed for children 4-8 years old. After a bit of an issue redeeming our gift voucher, I had to sign up and pay for a month and then apply it to my account. I am willing to bet that was a That Girl issue and not a Kiwi Crate issue. They happily applied my credit to my account after the fact, even though it would not work for me. So the customer service was great, but as with any company during the holiday rush, it was not an immediate response. I just signed up and chose when I wanted the deliveries to begin.
Wacky Wednesday – That Dirty Heroic Horse
Breast Cancer isn’t really very funny. Parenthood, however, I will admit can be really really funny. And I do try to laugh at myself as often as possible. When you combine That Girl, That Guy, and My Girls, you get a pretty Wacky life. When I was a child, probably when I was learning to read, one of my favorite books was “Wacky Wednesday” by Dr. Seuss. Since we constantly talk about how wacky my oldest is, some Wednesdays I will be sharing what I think are pretty Wacky stories, quotes, and silliness from our lives. Enjoy!
That Little Girl is learning to read. It is going well, and I couldn’t be prouder. The process has had it’s ups and downs, but hearing her read and figure out a new word is really amazing entirely making up for any of the “downs”. Since it often involves a homework assignment, sometimes it is a struggle to get her to sit down and do it. Making it a task, instead of something for fun when she just stumbles upon it herself, really seems to have taken the joy away from reading for That Little Girl. Second to having her read a book to me, I get the warm fuzzies when I happen upon her obviously reading a book alone.

So I know we are late to have the talk with That Little Girl. Not THAT talk, just the first half where we tell her about boys and girls being anatomically different. I don’t want her to grow up thinking the difference is that girls are born with a ponytail, like someone was told (cough cough) by her best friend growing up. And I mean, it is go time now. We have got to have this talk. We intended to have it before school started. Going through a really strong do not let other people touch or see your bathing suit parts and if it happens let us know. That was exhausting enough that night. Not to mention having the feeling that you really shouldn’t have to have these conversations the entire time. That Guy and I keep talking about having this part of the talk. Hopefully before the next swim lesson.
When it Rains
The last couple of weeks have been a real blast for That Family. Just as I got in a rhythm with my new running plan, I took a bit of a stumble coming out of the house. I have no idea how, and it may be a coincidence, but ever since then I have been having a lot of heel pain. It is a literal pain point (currently diagnosed as plantar fasciitis). I can push on a certain point and feel where it is. Since it hurt the same whether or not I kept up my running, I tried to keep up with the plan. [Read more…]

Every one has that thing that can get them out of trouble or get them what they are wanting. We all have that friend who can talk their way into or out of anything. Or the one who can charm their way into great opportunity. For my girls, it is their eyes and smiles. That Baby is just at that phase where you ask her to smile for a picture and bam, out comes the most adorably un-adorable smile. You can’t help but love it because she is truly happy she knows what you are saying and so eager to cooperate. Oh, that smile! [Read more…]
Wacky Wednesday – Peonies and Flower Picking
I absolutely love planting flowers each spring. The weeding and mulching, I could do without, but one of those two That Guy is willing to help with so it all works out in the end. My favorite time of year is when my peonies bloom. I planted the bushes the year we were married since they were part of my wedding bouquet. As we are married longer, the bushes mature and each year there are more and more blooms. I will be sad to leave them behind when we do move eventually, but I kind of have hopes that I can take them with us somehow and then add to them in a new home.
Not this year, but in the past, I have talked up the peony blooms to That Little Girl. It got to the point that she was asking when the “panties” were going to pop open. It took a little bit, but she eventually started calling them peonies.
She is the best little helper when I am out planting flowers. The first time I was out this year, she was raking up the leaves and junk that I was pulling out of the flower beds. She would make me piles of what I threw on the patio and sidewalk to make it easier to clean up. Of course, she then asked to be rewarded with her very own first frappuccino! She loved her strawberry (no caffeine) treat and I was thankful they have a teeny tiny size for summer. Luckily she understands it is a very once in a while/lifetime treat. She worked her little tushie off that day! And since I still tire easily, I will take all the help I can get. And then I will rest after doing next to nothing compared to what I could accomplish in the past. So this spring all the work has taken a lot longer than usual and I am still not done.
Another day, she was not feeling well and I was out planting flowers on my own most of the time. I find planting the actual flowers goes really quickly once all the crap work is done. So wish it were the other way around! The actual planting is the fun part! Anyway, a few days later That Guy was outside with That Little Girl in the evening and I was out with a friend. He turned his back and That Little Girl decided to pick some flowers. But instead of picking flowers that are to be picked she pulled up entire plants. Then when I got home she scolded me for not digging deep enough holes without her help. The next time I went out she insisted on digging the holes for me. Since we aren’t suppose to call little girls bossy, I will just point out that she has amazing leadership skills!
Now we are entering the weeks of peony and rose blooms. I am terrified to turn my back and find them all picked bare and hacked to pieces!

Now that things are going better and I am more physically able, That Little Girl and I spend some time together just us. We try to do a couple hours each weekend, but we don’t always have it. We just do our best to line it up with That Baby’s nap so that That Guy can be doing something here at the house as well. Needless to say, it takes some coordination to make sure we hti all those goals. I am happy to say it has been really good for our relationship getting back to “the old days” as she likes to call it.
Wacky Wednesday – Frankly My Dear
Since this blog sat on my to do list for a while as I was busy living this life and journey, I’ve started out writing about the past. Most of it is pretty ugly. Breast Cancer isn’t really very funny. That Family had a busy evening recently. One of those nights when, after a busy day with work, doctor appointments, errands, school, and swim lessons, My Girls and I run in the door as That Guy is running out. With baths out of the way before he left, I only had dinner and bedtime before I could eat dinner myself and get some things done.
