Wacky Wednesday – Keeping It Real

Breast Cancer isn’t really very funny. Parenthood, however, I will admit can be really really funny. And I do try to laugh at myself as often as possible. When you combine That Girl, That Guy, and My Girls, you get a pretty Wacky life. When I was a child, probably when I was learning to read, one of my favorite books was “Wacky Wednesday” by Dr. Seuss. Since we constantly talk about how wacky my oldest is, my Wednesday posts will be sharing what I think are pretty Wacky stories, quotes, and silliness from our lives. Enjoy!

Just when I am starting to feel like someday I may have it all together, or at least as together as I ever had it in the Old Days, as That Little Girl likes to call our pre-cancer pre-That Baby lives, something comes along to let me know that in fact that is totally false. There have been really successful outings, even to New York for the day, but generally it has included four adults to the two kiddos. And as far as me personally, I seem to be stuck in a cycle of feeling normal-ish then getting knocked down a peg or two in energy and appearance to remind me this is just not over yet.

Yes I’m talking About My Nails Again

As I finish up with radiation, I am finding my nails are getting pretty awful again. I have had a ridge in them that is either a result of the SVC syndrome blood clots (someone suggested my hands were so swollen it pinched the nails beds) or the chemo drugs making them noticeably thinner. Either way, they are ripping low as that ridge grows out! And these ripped nails are getting caught on everything and every little one I touch. Must mean it is time to get a new spring color in my favorite polish, right? Check out the last time I talked about this Brittle Nail Side Effect here.

Sometimes It Is The Little Things

This could also be called, Sometimes It Is The Really Superficial Unimportant Things. Potato, Potahtoh. Either way, a few things that have been making me feel a little more like myself lately are worth noting. [Read more…]

Happy New Year, Butter-cup!

So back when we were younger, a friend said to me, “Drink Up, Buttercup!” somewhere in the midst of twenty-first birthday festivities. Turns out, that phrase lends itself to many situations. I have often thought to myself over the past year, “Suck it up, Buttercup”. I have told That Little Girl, “Let’s Pick Up, Buttercup!” So whatever your New Year’s plans, I hope you have a safe and happy night ahead of you!

So, Buttercups, I was lucky enough to receive three new Butter Nail Lacquers between Christmas gifts and gift cards. The other three I had bought and mentioned previously, well, I couldn’t quite hold out long enough for them to make it into my stocking. Here are the three newbies. I am definitely expanding beyond neutrals!

Sidestepping Side Effects – Brittle Nails

IMG_5533_2Both of the courses of chemotherapy I have had, Adriamycin and Cytoxan followed by Taxol, Herceptin, and Perjeta, have listed brittle nails as a side effect. It may have been the pregnancy nails hanging in there post partum for the first few months or maybe the now change to cooler dryer weather, but the T/H/P really has done a number on my nails. One thing I have found to help, is keeping them polished all the time. At one of the oncology appointments my doctor specifically asked about my nails. Some people have a really rough experience and lose nails, they discolor, and so on. So far, so good. I explained, yes they were a mess and broke very easily, but as long as I kept them polished they were fine. Even I had to smile, because really, tough life I have, right?! He snickered and said, “hey, whatever works!” This has also been a way for me to carve out some time to pamper myself and zone out on some guilty pleasure television (Real Housewives of Anyplace, anyone?).

Wacky Wednesday – The Night that Failed

Breast Cancer isn’t really very funny. Parenthood, however, I will admit can be really really funny. And I do try to laugh at myself as often as possible. When you combine That Girl, That Guy, and My Girls, you get a pretty Wacky life. When I was a child, probably when I was learning to read, one of my favorite books was “Wacky Wednesday” by Dr. Seuss. Since we constantly talk about how wacky my oldest is, some Wednesdays I will be sharing what I think are pretty Wacky stories, quotes, and silliness from our lives. Enjoy!

I think I’ve mentioned that I have lost my eyelashes and eyebrows at this point. I recently forgot to add my eyebrows on before going out for the day and pretty sure I was raising some eyebrows. I could not for the life of me figure out why one woman I met was asking so many questions and looking at me funny. I was all made up without eyelashes or eyebrows. Whoops! That Guy and I giggled about it when we got home since I didn’t notice until then. I had looked in the mirror but had sunglasses on and never even noticed.

The First Two Weeks Between

My particular experience for this chemotherapy protocol gave me two weeks “off” to rest up and have somewhat of a normal life in between treatment weeks. That is not what they are intended for, but after the first treatment, I was feeling fairly normal for these weeks after the first week. That would change as the summer went on. That is not to say I didn’t spend a significant amount of time during these weeks at the doctor’s office or dealing with cancer related things in addition to having a newborn. It just means, I didn’t spend them feeling entirely terrible all day long everyday and laying around the house unable to do much of anything trying to keep my food down.

Yes, I needed a haircut

So you read all about how I chose my wig and how my daughter told people about it, but that all happened so long ago that I had to get a wig cut already. For the last month or so I had noticed that combing out my wig, it was getting a bit rough. Like when your hair gets a bit long and the ends are just rough and damaged and need to be trimmed. I was getting a little too close to Barbie frizz territory and I decided to call the woman who sold me the wig to schedule a trim. When I told my mom I had called to schedule a haircut, well, she did a double take, “Wait, what?” reaction.
