Wacky Wednesday – A Bit of a Picker Upper

Breast Cancer isn’t really very funny. Parenthood, however, I will admit can be really really funny. And I do try to laugh at myself as often as possible. When you combine That Girl, That Guy, and My Girls, you get a pretty Wacky life. When I was a child, probably when I was learning to read, one of my favorite books was “Wacky Wednesday” by Dr. Seuss. Since we constantly talk about how wacky my oldest is, some Wednesdays I will be sharing what I think are pretty Wacky stories, quotes, and silliness from our lives. Enjoy!

I’m not sure how other people do it day to day. Sometimes my house looks like a preschool sized tornado just went through. Then when we have anyone coming over we really pick up and clean. Any given day though it is like damage control to just keep toys in their place and even in the right room, let alone dust, vacuum, and deep cleaning every single room. It’s like a spot cleaning and picking up situation more often than not with the real cleaning saved for special events like friends and family. So you could say, I am a bit of a Picker Upper. Moral of the story, dear friends: come visit more often so my house is cleaner and nicer.

Cycle One Week One

The day after my first A-C chemo treatment, Day 2, I woke up feeling fairly normal. This was as expected I think. I was careful not to kiss my family on the lips. I was using my own bathroom. I was drinking plenty of water. I was careful to take the prescribed medications exactly how and when they were prescribed to avoid side effects.

Wacky Wednesday – Odds and Ends

Since this blog sat on my to do list for a while as I was busy living this life and journey, I’ve started out writing about the past. Most of it is pretty ugly. Breast Cancer isn’t really very funny. We had a pretty jam packed day recently. It seems That Little Girl may have inherited my mother and I’s tendency to start getting really silly when she starts to get tired. By late afternoon, she was really getting crazy. These are just a couple of quotes from about a thirty minute span that afternoon. To know her is to love her and if you do know her you will understand just how she delivered these and it will probably be funnier for those of you who know us in real life. I apologize to the rest of you.

Prior to my first chemotherapy infusion, I had met with someone in the oncologist’s office. I was pretty nervous about the whole thing as it was brand new to me and I had no idea what to expect. Friends had told me stories about their friends and family and some of the pictures they painted were really awful. So there I sit, telling her how nervous I am and she is going on about how my blood levels may dip so low that I won’t be able to leave the house for the next six months and if I do I will have to wear a mask and so on. I was not expecting to feel well enough to go do anything significant, but I was not expecting full on house arrest, either. I was not feeling any more relaxed about what to expect when I left to get my infusion that afternoon.

The day before we attended our local Halloween parade, That Little Girl was talking about it and looking forward to it. It was a non-stop thought for her. I am not sure if she was more excited to get candy or dress up as her favorite princess. I may have lost the princess battle in this house, but I do fight the candy and junk food battle pretty well. We don’t allow her too much candy normally, so to her this is the mother lode of junk food for her. I am not sure how common it is to still throw candy from floats and as the participants walk by, but our town still allows it.

The title of the post is in honor of my college roommate, who is likely going to be ashamed of me when she reads this story!

Sometime in the last few weeks, I have had serious cravings for pumpkin bread, and all baked goods that are fall themed, start in full force. While everyone else is lining up for pumpkin spice lattes, I’m all about that pumpkin bread and spiced chai tea combination. This is not a new thing, it seems to happen every year. I’ve made pumpkin spice cupcakes, the standard pumpkin bread from a box, and we even tried a pumpkin pasta disaster this past week. My Paprika App is filled to the brim with alternative versions of both chai tea and pumpkin bread this year as I am making efforts to avoid sugar, processed foods, and so forth, however, I will admit to indulging in my original favorites now and again from Starbucks.

So it is not a secret to those closest to me that I enjoy a good shopping trip. Over the years, I generally shop the same places and have become friendly with long time employees there. Like most expectant and then new moms, I wasn’t out shopping much during that time. About one month after my treatments started, I decided to ditch what had passed for casual office attire for some more comfortable stay-at-home mom type clothes now and again when running here and there. So out I went to find some that were a little bit more presentable than what others might mistake for pajamas. I also decided to get over my fear of having to try on clothes in public with a wig on.

When you have a daughter like my oldest, you just never know what wacky thing might come out of her mouth. Shortly after our second daughter was born, our preschool aged daughter had a dental check up. Since she is still in the baby teeth world and dentist appointments are pretty quick deals to get them accustomed to going and get over any fear, they allow the parents to go back with the kids. The practice she goes to is the same one I went to as a child and somehow the hygienists are the same ladies. If you are reading this ladies, let me note that they have not aged a bit. Seriously. Also, they are sweet women who claim to remember me. [Read more…]
